The route crosses the peninsula between Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait. The course goes up and over Arthur's Seat, passes through Greens Bush (a large area of remnant native bushland on the peninsula), and follows cliff tops of Bass Strait as it approaches the Cape Schanck lighthouse.
