Twin Mountain Trudge
The Twin Mountain Trudge is scheduled for January 9, 2027 in Laramie, WY and will be held for its 23rd running. The event offers two loop options that circle the Twin Mountain massif and cross rock outcroppings and valleys under winter conditions.
- Single Loop about 10.2 miles
- Double Loop about 20.5 miles
The single loop contains long stretches of thigh-deep snow, some ice, and about 2000 feet of climbing. The double loop repeats the same circuit; competitors pass a mid-loop unmanned point twice and find a fully stocked aid table with warm food at the halfway point (start/finish). There is no way off the loop until the finish; rescue or recovery may take hours.
Snowshoes, skis, or other flotation devices are not allowed. Ski or trekking poles, traction devices (for example MicroSpikes or YakTrax), and grit are allowed. Mandatory gear, checked at registration and at the finish, includes 40 oz of fluids, 400 calories of food, firestarter, wind coat, long pants, warm hat, gloves or mitts, emergency whistle, mylar emergency space blanket, and a headlamp or flashlight if attempting the double loop. To start the second loop, runners must complete the first loop in under 3 hours 30 minutes.
Expected completion times for the single loop range from about two hours for top finishers to three to five hours or more for others. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
