5K Run and Walk Event
The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk is an annual event held in Preston, Georgia. The series honors the memory of a New York City firefighter and all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. This community-focused event supports programs for first responders and military members.
The main course is a 5 km (3.2 miles) route that participants can choose to run or walk. The event is untimed and emphasizes the experience of honoring service members. Participants are permitted to use strollers or wheelchairs on the course. Specialized equipment, such as firefighter turnout gear and military backpacks, is also encouraged for those who wish to wear it during the run.
Event Logistics
The event features a unique logistical setup where the start and finish lines are in different locations. Participants park at the Centerpoint Schoolhouse, where packet pickup and opening ceremonies take place. From there, a shuttle bus transports participants to the start line at the Centerpoint Fire Station. Water stations are provided along the route and at the finish line.
Additional Activities
Beyond the 5 km distance, the event includes several other activities:
- Kids' Donut Dash: A 40-yard sprint for children aged 12 and under.
- Cornhole Tournament: A separate competition for those who prefer not to run or walk.
- On-site Entertainment: Features include live music, bounce houses, face painting, and on-site massages for participants.
Registration is available for various categories, including adults, first responders, military personal, and youth. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
