Tug Hill Yeti Quest
Tug Hill Outfitters presents a winter orienteering adventure at the Black River Environmental Improvement Association (BREIA) Trails in Booneville, NY. Teams must travel on snowshoes and/or skis, subject to snow conditions, and navigate the course using only a map and compass; GPS devices are not allowed. Teams score by finding checkpoints; teams that return after the time limit lose one checkpoint for every minute they are late.
Registration includes a performance winter beanie, one set of maps per team with an option to buy an extra set during registration, snacks, a post-race meal, and prizes for top teams. Limited snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals are available.
The event offers three main options: a 3-hour cross-country ski and snowshoe orienteering race intended to include groomed trails and off-trail sections, an 8-hour combined ski and snowshoe adventure on groomed and backcountry terrain, and an 8-hour snowshoe-only adventure. Teams may switch between skis and snowshoes where allowed; some formats include at least one designated transition area while others may require carrying alternate equipment.
Team sizes range from solo racers to teams of up to six people, with adult teams capped at four and family teams allowed up to six. The course and final distances are subject to final determination by the organizers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
