Tug Hill Yeti Quest : January 31, 2026
The Tug Hill Yeti Quest is a winter orienteering adventure held at the Black River Environmental Improvement Association (BREIA) Trails in Booneville, New York. The event offers three race options: 8-hour cross-country ski and snowshoe, 8-hour snowshoe, and 3-hour cross-country ski/snowshoe. Registration includes a performance winter beanie, one set of maps per team (with an option to purchase an extra set), snacks, a post-race meal, and prizes for top finishing teams. Final course distances are still being determined. Limited snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals are available.
Race format and rules
Teams must travel using snowshoes and/or skis depending on the event and local snow conditions. Navigation is by map and compass only; GPS devices are not allowed. Courses combine groomed trails and off-trail bushwhacking through the woods. Teams compete to find the most checkpoints; teams that return after the time cut-off incur a penalty of one checkpoint lost per minute late. Team sizes may range from one to six people, with adult teams capped at four and family teams allowed up to six. Race categories include solo, two-person, three- and four-person, and family teams, with gender-specific and mixed divisions and prizes by category. A free navigation clinic is offered before the 3-hour race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
