Trail of the Dragon 50K/50 Mile Run
The Trail of the Dragon takes place in Moorehead Park, located in Ida Grove, Iowa. The event is held in conjunction with the Moorehead Park Trail Mazathon. The course features 10 mile loops over single track dirt and mowed meadows through rolling hills. Runners pass several historical landmarks, including an old stage coach trail, a homestead, a historic cemetery, and a one room school house.
The event offers two main distances:
- 50k: Three 10 mile loops plus a 1 mile out and back section.
- 50 Mile Run: Five 10 mile loops.
Each 10 mile loop includes approximately 1000 feet of elevation gain. The course is well-marked and maintained, though participants may encounter wet grass in the meadow sections. Finisher medals are awarded to all who complete their chosen distance.
The course includes two fully manned aid stations per loop, located at the start/finish line and at approximately mile 5. These stations provide water, electrolyte drinks, and various food items such as sandwiches, fruit, and snacks. This is a cupless event; participants must carry their own hydration device, and running without one is not permitted. Additionally, three unmanned water-only stations are located at miles 2, 4, and 8. Drop bag locations are available at the start/finish and the mid-way aid station.
Proceeds from the event support the Ida County Conservation Foundation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
