Tough Mugu : July 18, 2026
Tough Mugu is a trail running event at La Jolla Group Campground in Point Mugu State Park, Malibu, CA. It is Race #2 of the Bulldog Challenge Series. The event offers chip-timed results, included finisher medal and race tee, and a post-race festival with breakfast tacos, a beer garden (21+), sport massages, and next-day race photos. Registration closes July 17, 2026. Parking is free on Pacific Coast Highway near Thornhill Broom Campground; participants are asked to keep all wheels off the road and observe signage.
Courses, aid and support
- 25k - 15.75 miles with 2,427 ft vertical gain.
- 10k - 6.2 miles with 1,164 ft vertical gain.
The 25k follows the Ray Miller Trail onto fire roads and single track, includes a scenic bypass around Mugu Peak with views of the Channel Islands and Boney Mountain, and finishes with Ray Miller switchbacks. Aid stations are located at multiple mile points and are stocked with Skratch Labs hydration; some stations are water-only. Aid stations are staffed by local run clubs. The event is cupless and provides certified medical support, course marking, finish-line announcers, and same-day online results.
Awards and series scoring
A podium prize purse is offered with $2,000 total (1st $500, 2nd $300, 3rd $200). Custom overall and age-group awards are given for both distances across standard 10-year age categories. Series points are awarded based on finish time as a percentage of the winner’s time; women and men are scored separately. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
