About the race
The Tongariro River Trail event is held at Taupahi Reserve in Turangi and follows the Tongariro River through native forest and Department of Conservation land. The route features swing bridges and river crossings, with views of anglers and trout in well known freshwater fishing spots.
Three course options are offered:
- 5 km short course on mainly well formed bush trail.
- 11.2 km mid course that follows the river, crosses at Red Hut Bridge and Major Jones Bridge.
- 14.5 km long course that includes the mid course route plus the short course loop.
Track condition is approximately 90% well formed bush trail and 10% footpath. Elevation gain is listed as 44 m for the short course, 68 m for the mid course, and 103 m for the long course. Course wayfinding uses green arrows and coloured border arrows that match participant wristbands; additional red tree tags mark the route every few hundred metres.
On-course pitstops provide water and snacks including Tasti, Jaffas, Comvita honey sachets, Haribo lollies and PURE Sports Nutrition electrolytes. Event village services include a CamelBak hydration station, recovery offerings, sponsor activations, event photos available for purchase, and complimentary post-event refreshments such as sparkling water and a sausage sizzle for participants.
