Event overview
The Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash is the 7th annual pack burro race held on April 18, 2026, in Tombstone, Arizona (501 Toughnut). The event offers three course distances and requires each entry to be a team of one runner and one donkey. Entries are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Distances
- 3 mile intro course - pack saddle not required
- 6 mile short course - pack saddle not required
- 13 mile long course - pack saddle required with mining gear
Course, rules and safety
Courses are described as challenging and rocky; donkey boots are highly recommended but not mandatory. The 13 mile course requires a pack saddle carrying a pick, gold pan, and shovel; loss or absence of these items results in disqualification. Donkeys must be sound, healthy, and fit to race. No other equines are permitted and riding is not allowed. Each donkey must be led with a halter and a single lead rope no longer than 15 feet. Teams must stay together and may not swap donkeys. Courses are marked by colored ribbons: yellow for 3 mile, blue for 6 mile, and orange for 13 mile. Water stations and first aid supplies are placed at course breakoffs, near Charleston Road crossing, and at Monument Guest Ranch for the 13 mile route.
Awards and camping
Trophies are awarded to the top three finishers in the 3 mile and 6 mile races. The 13 mile awards trophies plus prize money: 1st $500, 2nd $300, 3rd $200. Dry camping is available for $20 per night; pens and limited corral space are noted as available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
