The Tombstone Desert Donkey Dash is a pack burro style trail race held in Tombstone, Arizona. The event offers three marked courses on rocky, challenging terrain and requires each team to consist of one runner and one donkey. The race base is at 501 Toughnut in Tombstone.
Distances
- 3 mile intro: pack saddle not required
- 6 mile short: pack saddle not required
- 13 mile long: pack saddle required with pick, gold pan, and shovel
Race rules specify that each runner must have a personal donkey or have arranged one prior to registering. No solo runners are allowed, no other equines may race, and riding is prohibited. The lead rope must attach to a halter and only a single lead rope not exceeding 15 feet may be used. The 13 mile course requires a pack saddle carrying prospector paraphernalia; missing items on course result in disqualification.
Courses are marked by color and include water stations and first aid supplies at key points, with emergency crew on standby. Veterinary checks are recommended and out-of-state donkeys must have a negative Coggins test and health certificate as required by state law. Awards include trophies for the top three in the 3 mile and 6 mile races, and trophies plus prize money for the top three in the 13 mile race. All entries are non refundable and non transferable.
