About the race
Toi's Challenge is an annual trail event in Whakatāne, New Zealand, held in November and organised by the Whakatane Athletics and Harriers Club. The event follows the Nga Tāpuwae o Toi track, named after a Māori chief who lived in the area around 800 years ago, and features coastal and bush scenery along the route.
The main trail distance is approximately 18 km, with an alternative shorter event of 6 km. The longer route includes nearly 1000 m of elevation gain and is routed on rugged terrain, making it more physically demanding than a road half-marathon of similar distance. The event offers several entry formats for the longer distance, including a walk option and a two-person team relay, and different fee periods are published for early, normal, and late entry.
