Annual benefit 5K
The event is an annual benefit 5K run and walk hosted by Saint Peter Lutheran Church to support medical and educational ministries in Tanzania. Beneficiaries named by the organizer include Selian Lutheran Hospital, Selian Hospice, the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre and its School of Nursing, The Plaster House, the Step by Step Learning Center and Eripoto Safe House, and the Maasae Girls Lutheran Secondary School. The church describes itself as a partner with these ministries and says the work supports healthcare, housing, education and counseling for girls and young women experiencing discrimination and trafficking.
The course is a timed, certified 5K that begins and ends in the church parking lot. The event is family friendly and open to all ages. Registration fees listed for the event include an adult option at $40 with a T shirt and a youth option for ages 6 to 17 at $15 with a T shirt; children 5 and under are free and a $15 donation is suggested if a T shirt is ordered. Overflow parking is available next door at The Village Child Development Center.
Registration is said to include a race T shirt, water, food, music and door prizes, plus authentic East African finger foods from Msosi Kenyan Cuisine and activities for young children. After the event there is an opportunity to hear about recent visits to Tanzanian hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools and other partner ministries.
