Titanic Challenge Trail Run
The Titanic Challenge is a one day trail run on 5 September 2026 in and around Clarens in the Eastern Free State. The event uses mountain trails, farmland, and protected natural areas, with routes that are well marked and supported and a stated focus on safety and organisation.
Distances offered:
- 5 km
- 10 km
- 21 km
- 35 km
- 50 km
Longer routes include sections across private game and livestock farms, and more than 30 km of the overall route are only accessible on race day. The event began in 2022 and has since become a regular fixture on the South African trail running calendar.
The Titanic Challenge is hosted by the Clarens Village Conservancy. All funds raised go toward the protection and upkeep of the Clarens Nature Reserve. Entry fees support conservation work, a ranger employment programme, environmental education for schools and community groups, and accessibility projects including the Free State’s first wheelchair friendly nature trail.
The event is organised by local residents and volunteers from Clarens. No dogs are allowed because parts of the route pass through private and protected areas. Entries close on 26 August 2026 or earlier depending on ticket sales. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
