Thunderbird Warrior Challenge
The Thunderbird Warrior Challenge is a trail running fundraiser held June 13, 2026 at Mt. Ashwabay Outdoor Recreation Area in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Proceeds from the event are split between Camp Benesi and Mt. Ashwabay.
Distances offered:
- 50K trail run
- 25K trail run
- 10K trail run
- 5K fun run with obstacles
The course combines flowy, rolling trails and technical singletrack. Runners travel through a northwoods mosaic of old growth maple and hemlock and sandy pine stands, with panoramic views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. The looped route places about two thirds of mileage on singletrack and the remaining one third on cross-country ski trails and two-track.
The route starts on the slopes of Mt. Ashwabay near the Big Top Chautauqua tent and passes through the Nourse Sugarbush State Natural Area, where a historic sugar shack and remnant stands of sugar maple and hemlock are located. The course includes a climb to the peak of Mt. Ashwabay, technical singletrack descents, glacial ravines, and sections where native wildflowers such as pink lady slipper orchids can appear along the trail.
On-site camping is rustic with no hookups or on-site water or electricity. Porta-potties and communal fire rings are provided. Quiet hours run from 10 pm to 5 am, generators are not allowed after 10 pm, and campsites are limited to four people per site. Certain items and activities are prohibited in campgrounds, including glass containers, fireworks, drones, and unauthorized motorized vehicles.
