The MTC Windsor Ultra
The MTC Windsor Ultra is a point to point ultra running event covering 47 miles along the River Thames from Henley to Kingston upon Thames. The route passes a sequence of river and village landmarks including Seven Corner Alley, Marlow Lock, Cookham Bridge and Cookham Moor, Maidenhead Bridge, Dorney Thames Field, Boveney Lock, Windsor Racecourse, Brocas Meadow with views of Windsor Castle, Windsor Bridge, Runnymede, Bellweir Lock, Staines Bridge and the intake to the Queen Mary Reservoir before leaving the Thames Path to finish outside Travelodge Kingston Central, KT1 2PD. The start is outside The Catherine Wheel, Henley, RG9 2AR.
The event operates three checkpoints that provide water and basic nutrition. Example items listed by the organiser include malt loaf, cake, jam, peanut butter, sandwiches, sweets, dried fruit, squash, cola and water, with efforts made to cater for gluten free, vegan and vegetarian needs. Checkpoint distances are: Start to CP1 9.5 miles; CP1 to CP2 12 miles; CP2 to CP3 13.9 miles; CP3 to Finish 12.9 miles. CP closure times are set relative to the race start and are enforced.
Mandatory kit includes a GPX device or the route downloaded to a phone with sufficient battery backup, and a mobile phone. Competitors must be self-sufficient for travel to the start and from the finish. Entrants must be 20 years or over on the start day. All entries and payments are non refundable. All finishers receive a bespoke Windsor Ultra medal and a choice of a bespoke technical tee shirt, mug or hat; first male and female finishers receive an individual trophy. The course ascent is 155 metres and descent 182 metres. Competitors must maintain an average of 4.0 miles per hour including stops or they may be removed from the race.
