The Void

The Void is an endurance event centered on a 48-hour time limit. The course takes place entirely inside the Sideling Hill Tunnel, an abandoned structure located along the Old Turnpike Trail near Valley-Hi, Pennsylvania. This site originally served as a section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike before being decommissioned in 1968.

The physical format of the challenge involves completing 63 out-and-back repetitions through a 1.3-mile corridor. This results in a total distance of approximately 160 miles on a paved surface. Runners encounter a turnaround point every 1.3 miles, providing an opportunity to exit or continue the effort every 2.5 miles.

The environment within the tunnel possesses no interior lighting, requiring participants to rely on personal headlamps for the duration of the 48 hours. There is no scenery or variation in the surroundings, focusing the experience on repetition and isolation within the dark corridor.

A specific Toll Ticket system governs the competition. Participants are issued a physical ticket at check-in, which dictates how frequently a runner is permitted to leave the tunnel to access external support. This system is designed to emphasize logistical planning and discipline.

Participation is limited to 96 entrants. Candidates must submit an application for review by the organizers. While various backgrounds are considered, priority is given to those who have completed a 100-mile ultramarathon, backyard ultra, or comparable extreme endurance event within the last three years. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
