The Void
The Void is a 48 hour out and back ultramarathon held inside Sideling Hill Tunnel near Valley-Hi, PA, organized by ESTEA. The course runs entirely on pavement through a 1.3 mile corridor. Over the event, runners complete 63 out and backs for a total just under 160 miles.
The tunnel is abandoned and has no interior lighting. Participants rely on their own headlamps as they move repeatedly between light and darkness. The route is simple in layout: run to a turnaround cone and return along the same corridor, repeating that pattern for the duration of the event.
Race operations use a physical Toll Ticket issued at check in. The Toll Ticket governs how often a runner may exit the tunnel to access external support. This system is intended to make planning and discipline part of the challenge.
Entry requires an application that is reviewed by race directors. Priority is given to applicants with recent extreme endurance experience. The organizers recommend completion of at least one 100 mile ultramarathon, backyard ultra, FKT, or comparable event within three years of registration. The event is limited to 96 participants.
