The Void
The Void is a 48 hour, out and back ultramarathon held inside Sideling Hill Tunnel near Valley-Hi, Pennsylvania. The course runs along a 1.3 mile corridor; participants complete 63 out and back laps for a total just under 160 miles. The tunnel has no interior lighting, so runners navigate repeated periods of darkness using headlamps and their own pacing and decision making.
The event emphasizes solitude and repetition rather than competition between runners. The format gives frequent points where a runner can stop, making the event physically straightforward but psychologically demanding. A physical Toll Ticket system issued at check in governs how often a runner may leave the tunnel to access outside support. The system is intended to require discipline and planning.
Entry to the event requires an application reviewed by the race directors. Priority is given to applicants with documented extreme endurance experience. Organizers recommend completion of at least one 100 mile ultramarathon, backyard ultra, FKT, or a comparable extreme endurance event within three years of registration for stronger consideration. The field is limited to 96 participants. The venue is the abandoned Sideling Hill Tunnel, part of the Old Turnpike Trail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
