End of the Road Half Marathon and One Tunnel 4 Miler : Waterfall, PA
The event takes place October 24 and 25, 2026, at a section of the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike near Waterfall, Pennsylvania. The course includes several miles of running inside long, dark tunnels that were bypassed in 1968 and left without regular vehicle traffic for nearly 50 years. Tunnel running combines with rolling rural roads and mountain scenery along the route.
Race options include both in-person and virtual choices. In person, runners can choose the 13.1 miles half marathon (available Saturday or Sunday) or the 4 miles One Tunnel 4 Miler on Sunday. Two-day challenge options pair events across the weekend, including a 26.2 miles back-to-back half marathon challenge and a 17.1 miles combined challenge. Virtual participants use a tracking app to record and submit results; virtual entries include the race shirt and finisher medal after finish time submission.
Logistical notes published by the organizer mention a required headlamp or flashlight for tunnel sections, limited field sizes on race days, official pacers for the half marathons, a Saturday evening movie night on the turnpike, and a nearby host hotel that handles packet pickup. Part of event proceeds support The Old PA Pike effort to convert the abandoned turnpike into a greenway. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
