Event overview
The End of the Road event is held on the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike in Waterfall, Pennsylvania. It takes place over a weekend in October and uses the closed turnpike roadway and tunnels that were bypassed in 1968. The course passes through unlit tunnel sections and wooded areas with fall foliage. Each race day is capped at 600 participants. A movie night on the turnpike and two-day race options are part of the weekend schedule. Parking is available at the start/finish area; there is one way in and one way out.
Race details
- Half Marathon - 13.1 miles on the abandoned turnpike; includes two unlit tunnels.
- One Tunnel 4 Miler - route reaches the far end of the first tunnel then returns.
- Two-Day Challenge - combination of Saturday and Sunday races.
Headlamps or flashlights are required for tunnel sections. The half marathon course contains long, crumbling road sections and tunnels that lack lights. The event provides post-race food and beverages, custom shirts, live splits and chip timing, and finisher medals. Awards include top three overall males and females for each distance and age-group awards across multiple age brackets; finishers receive medals for completing the half marathon or 4 Mile.
The event policy states no refunds within 30 days of the event; requests made earlier may receive a 50% refund of the entry fee, excluding processing fees. Entries cannot be deferred to another year, but they can be transferred to another individual for a $5 fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
