Event Overview
The Sesquilizer is a specialized running event held in Columbia, South Carolina. The race utilizes an "equalizer" format, similar to the Dipsea race in California or the Wauhatchie race in Tennessee. In this structure, various age and gender groups receive different start times to equalize the field, allowing participants across different demographics to compete directly for overall positions.
Course Information
Participants compete on a single distance:
- 8.67 miles
The course includes approximately 700 feet of vertical elevation gain. The route is designed to provide a unique experience within the regional racing circuit of South Carolina and North Carolina.
Competition Format
The race features 22 distinct start groups departing in one-minute intervals. The first group, consisting of women aged 66 and older and men aged 74 and older, begins 22 minutes before the final group. The last group to depart consists of the fastest young men, at which point the official race clock begins. Runners who wish to participate alongside friends or family members in different age or gender brackets must start in the time slot assigned to the later participant.
Participant Details
Awards are presented to the top eight overall finishers. Because the field is equalized by the staggered start times, there are no separate categories for age or gender awards.
