The Sand Monster
The Sand Monster is a 6 hour timed trail race held on March 21, 2027 in Sesquicentennial State Park, Columbia, SC, at 9564 Two Notch Road. Athletes may run, hike, or walk as many laps as they wish within the six hour limit.
The course is a 3.5 mile loop with about 270 feet of vertical gain. Runners will encounter a mix of single track and double track, one longer sandy climb, and trails covered with pine needles beneath firm sand. The route is shaded by trees and will be well marked.
A finish requires completion of at least one full loop within the six hour window; all laps must be completed before the end of the timed period. If multiple competitors complete the same number of laps, finishing order for the last completed lap determines placing. Typical finishes can range from a single lap to multiple laps totaling over 30 miles for faster runners.
Event services on race day include package pickup, a pre-race briefing, post-race awards, and a raffle. Each starter and many volunteers receive a Boco Gear technical trucker hat, a personalized bib, and at least one personalized inspiration card from a local fifth grader. Awards are planned for the top four overall male and female finishers and for top male and female grand masters age 50 and over; additional recognitions include Spirit, Honey Badger, and Far Out awards.
