The Sand Monster

The Sand Monster is a six hour timed trail race held on March 21, 2027 at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC. The event takes place on a loop course and is open to runners, hikers and walkers.

Athletes complete laps of a 3.5 mile loop that has about 270 feet of vertical gain per lap. The timed format gives each participant six hours to cover as many laps as they choose. Only one completed lap is required to register a finish and all laps must be completed within the six hour cutoff. If several athletes complete the same number of laps, placing is determined by the order in which they finished their last completed lap. A faster athlete might complete nine laps for a total of 31.5 miles; a tenth lap counts only if it is completed within the six hour limit.

The course mixes single track and double track. One of the two longer climbs is sandy but generally firm under the pine needle covering. Much of the route is shaded and the course will be well marked.

Event features described by the organizer include package pickup, a pre race briefing, on course support, portable toilets, event swag and awards. Each starter and many volunteers receive a Boco Gear technical trucker hat and a personalized bib; starters also receive at least one personalized inspiration card from a local 5th grader. Awards include top four overall male and female finishers, top male and female grand masters age 50 plus, several unique awards and a post race raffle.
