The Sand Monster
The Sand Monster is a six hour timed trail race held at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC. The event accepts runners, hikers, and walkers who may cover as many laps as they wish within the six hour time limit. A finish requires completing at least one loop.
The course is a 3.5 mile loop with about 270 feet of elevation gain per lap. Trails mix single track and double track. One of the longer climbs is sandy but generally firm underfoot; many trails are covered with pine needles and shaded by trees. The course will be marked and course support is provided.
Laps are counted by completed loops. Runners who complete more laps are placed ahead of those with fewer laps. If multiple participants complete the same number of laps, finishing order on the last completed loop determines placement. Organizers note that a lap must be completed within the six hour limit to count in official results.
Event services include packet pickup before the race, a pre-race briefing, multiple port-o-johns, and visible on-course support. Each starter and many volunteers receive a Boco Gear technical trucker hat and a personalized bib. Other items include a personalized inspiration card from local elementary school students, unique awards for top finishers and other special awards, and a post-event raffle.
