The Sand Monster - Columbia, SC
The Sand Monster is a six hour timed trail race held at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC (9564 Two Notch Road). The event uses a 3.5 mile loop with about 270 feet of vertical gain per lap. The course combines single track and double track, with pine needle cover, a longer sandy climb, and tree cover that provides shade. Trails are marked.
Athletes may run, hike, or walk and have six hours to complete as many laps as they choose. A finish requires at least one completed 3.5 mile lap within the six hour limit. Laps are counted toward results; final placement is determined first by number of completed loops and then by the order of finish for the last completed loop. There is no broom wagon; the primary cutoff is the six hour race end.
Organizers provide race amenities such as port-o-johns, personalized bibs, and participant swag. Each starter and each volunteer is planned to receive a Boco Gear technical trucker hat, and starters will receive a personalized inspiration card from local elementary students. Awards include top four overall male and female finishers, top male and female grand masters (50+), and special awards such as Spirit, Honey Badger, and Far Out. A raffle is planned during awards and a bell will mark distance milestones at the finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
