Event overview
The Sand Monster is a timed trail race held at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, South Carolina. The event runs for 6 hours on a looped trail course. The venue includes wooded trails in the park and an address listed as 9564 Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC.
Course, race format and awards
The course is a 3.5-mile loop with about 270 feet of elevation gain per lap. It mixes single-track and double-track trails, with one longer sandy climb, pine-needle-covered surfaces, and tree cover that provides shade. The course will be marked.
Runners need to complete at least one full lap within the event window to register a finish. Only laps completed before the six-hour cutoff count toward official results. Examples in the event material note that nine laps equal 31.5 miles and ten laps equal 35 miles, but a lap counts only if the runner returns before the cutoff. If multiple runners complete the same number of laps, placing is determined by the finish order of the last completed lap.
Each starter and many volunteers receive a Boco Gear technical trucker hat and a personalized inspiration card from a local fifth grader. Awards include top four overall male and female finishers, top male and female grand masters (50+), some spirit and novelty awards, and a post-race raffle.
