The Roanoke Canal 5k
The Roanoke Canal 5k is a trail event that follows the historic Roanoke Canal, built in 1823. Proceeds from the event will support replacement of the museum's aging batteau replicas; batteaux were boats used to haul cargo on narrow canals in the 1800s. Two replicas on site need replacement, and funds raised will contribute to those and other related efforts.
Event offerings include:
- 5K trail race on the Roanoke Canal Trail.
- Half Mile Fun Walk loop through Roanoke Rapids Day Use Park.
Registration for both events opens March 7, 2026. The 5K registration closes September 18, 2026; the Half Mile Fun Walk registration closes September 19, 2026. The 5K fee starts at $30 and increases to $40 on race day. The Half Mile Fun Walk fee is $10. Participants who register by September 1 will have a guaranteed t-shirt size. Packet pickup and race day registration will be held at 100 Oakwood Avenue, Roanoke Rapids, NC.
The 5K runs on a natural surface trail that is generally flat with a few hills. Runners pass several historical culverts and a large bulkhead that once diverted water into the canal for mill power. There is a one hour course limit. Awards will be presented to the top three overall men and women and to top men and women in age categories from youth (17 and under) through 70 plus.
