Mystery Miles: A Dice Run
This is a trail race at Buck Spring Park in Littleton, NC, run on a roughly mile-ish loop. The course, the start location, and the finish location are fixed, but the number of laps is decided by a dice roll shortly before the race begins.
Every participant runs at least one guaranteed lap. Race distance equals one lap plus the result of two four-sided dice (2d4) rolled about 30 seconds before the start, so all participants learn the total laps at the same moment. The roll produces a total race of between three and nine laps, which corresponds to an approximate range of 5K-ish to 15K-ish, depending on the final measured loop length.
Terrain is natural trail surfaces at Buck Spring Park, including roots, gravel, dirt, and hills. There are no separate distance categories; everyone registers for the same event and receives the same roll.
The event is presented by Dirty Soles Adventures. Organizers note that the loop is not a precisely measured road distance and recommend wearing appropriate trail shoes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
