The Next Loop - Deer Grove East
The event takes place at Deer Grove East Forest Preserve in Palatine, IL, at 1599 Pepper Tree Drive. The course uses a clearly marked loop that returns each lap to the same centralized start and finish area with a fully stocked aid station.
The trail system runs through restored prairie, open wetlands, oak savannas, and shaded woodland corridors. Terrain is primarily flat to gently rolling and includes a mix of paved and natural-surface trails that provide firm footing and a smooth running surface. Open sections provide wide views across prairie and wetland habitats, while wooded sections add periodic shade.
Deer Grove East is part of an ecologically significant preserve with restored grasslands, wetlands, and savannas. Participants may encounter deer, native birds, and seasonal wildflowers along the route. The loop format lets athletes complete one 5K loop at a time and choose whether to continue; each completed loop is recorded. The centralized aid station and access for crew and personal gear support pacing, fueling, and lap-by-lap strategy.
