Event overview

The Last Annual Heart of the South Road Race is a point-to-point road event of about 350 miles held in June 2026. Entrants park their vehicles at a parking area on Sand Mountain in North Georgia and are bused to an undisclosed location roughly 300 to 350 miles away. After arrival, runners receive maps of the course they must follow to return to their parked vehicles. After an overnight motel stay at the arrival location, the field is bused to the official start the next morning. Runners must complete the route within a 10 day cutoff.

Logistics and rules

Runners carry only the supplies they can obtain or carry along the route. Twice-daily location checks by phone are required; failure to check in may trigger a search. Participants who choose to drop may phone in and request transport back to the vehicle parking area; transportation is provided as soon as feasible. Finishers and their vehicles are shuttled to motels near the finish. Vehicles are parked at Castle Rock Ranch for the event. Lodging before the start is in double-occupancy motel rooms.

Registration closes June 9, 2026. Refunds are offered on a declining scale: 90% until December 24, then 80% in January and February, 70% in March and April, and 50% in May. A wait list is maintained after the race fills. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
