The Last Annual Heart of the South Road Race
The Last Annual Heart of the South Road Race is an ultra-distance road event held near Bryant, Georgia, with the field based at Castle Rock Ranch on Sand Mountain.
The event offers these distance options:
- 400 miles
- 350 miles
Entrants park their vehicles at the parking area, board buses that travel backward along the course toward an unknown start location between 350 and 400 miles away, and receive maps of the route back to their vehicles after arrival. Competitors spend an overnight motel stay before being bused to the start the following morning. From the start, runners travel with only the supplies they can carry or obtain along the way and must return to their parked vehicles within a 10.5 day cutoff.
Organizers maintain twice daily tracking and require regular check ins; failure to check in may prompt a search. Runners may withdraw at any time and will be transported back to the car park when feasible. Finishers are shuttled with their vehicles to motels near the finish for a rest before departing.
A lottery and wait list are used for entry; the initial lottery was scheduled for August 1, 2026. Refunds follow a declining schedule: 90% through December 24, then 80% in January and February, 70% in March and April, and 50% in May, with later refunds dependent on wait list replacements.
