Highland Ultra - Knoydart Peninsula
The Highland Ultra is a 125 km coastal mountain ultramarathon on the Knoydart Peninsula in the West Highlands of Scotland. The route runs over mountain trails and bogs, with rocky ascents, broad glens, rivers and high lochs. The area is reachable only by sea or on foot.
The race is organised as three stages over three days, with an overall event duration of four days including transfers. Base camp and the finish are at Longbeach, Inverie, and the event also starts in the remote village of Inverie. Accommodation is in tents and places are limited to 90 competitors. Entries may be individual or teams of 2 to 4.
Participants must carry the mandatory personal kit and are responsible for their own clothes, medical supplies, food and sleeping kit. The event provides GPS tracking, manned checkpoints and camps with medical and support staff, drinking water at checkpoints and camps, boiling water for freeze-dried meals at camps, storage and carriage of luggage, and transfers to and from the race. Checkpoints are placed at approximately every 10 km and include a small shelter and a qualified medic.
Typical daytime temperatures range from 5°C to 25°C and evening temperatures from 0°C to 10°C. The entry fee is £795 per athlete, payable in full or as two instalments (£397.50 deposit, £397.50 final payment due 90 days before the race). The event asks entrants to have completed a marathon-distance event within 12 months as a qualifying criterion.
Wildlife commonly seen in the area includes golden and sea eagles, red deer, otters, dolphins and occasional minky whale sightings. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
