Highland Ultra : Knoydart Peninsula, Scotland
The Highland Ultra is a 125 km coastal mountain ultra held on the Knoydart Peninsula in the West Highlands. The route runs over mountain trails and bogs across a remote area that is reachable only by sea or on foot. The event is staged over three stages in three days within a four day event schedule. Base camp and the finish are at Longbeach, Inverie, and the start is in the village of Inverie.
Terrain includes rocky mountains, broad glens, rivers and high lochs. Wildlife commonly seen in the area includes golden and sea eagles, red deer, otters, dolphins and occasional minky whale. Daytime temperatures on the race details range from about 5°C to 25°C and evening temperatures from about 0°C to 10°C; daylight hours are listed as 14.
Entries are limited and accommodation during the race is in tents. The entry fee options shown are £795 in full or two instalments of £397.50. The event package includes GPS tracking, manned checkpoints and camps with medical staff, drinking water on course and hot water for food preparation at camps, transfers to and from the race, storage and carriage of luggage, a race T shirt and a finishers medal, and a meal at the finish line. Checkpoints are placed at approximately every 10 km and each offers a small shelter and a qualified medic. Runners carry mandatory kit and must be self sufficient between checkpoints.
