Event Overview
The Hardwolds 80 is an ultramarathon event that follows the Wolds Way National Trail from Hessle to Filey. The route covers a total distance of 81 miles with approximately 2400 metres of total ascent. Participants travel through chalk landscapes, dry valleys, market towns, and ancient villages such as Brantingham, Londesborough, and Thixendale, as well as the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy.
Race Formats
The event offers two main participation options:
- 80 miles (Solo): Individual runners have a 24-hour time limit to complete the full distance.
- 80 miles (Relay): Teams of two to four runners share the distance, with at least one member checking in at every checkpoint.
Course and Logistics
The race begins at Hessle Rugby Club and concludes at the Filey Sea Cadets. There are eight manned checkpoints along the route with specific cut-off times. All checkpoints are stocked with water, refreshments, and food such as flapjacks, fruit, and nuts. Indoor checkpoints also provide hot drinks and hot food like pizza or rice pudding. No plastic cups are provided, so participants must carry their own reusable cups for both cold and hot drinks.
Equipment and Support
All competitors are required to carry mandatory safety kit, including waterproof clothing with taped seams, a survival bag, a headtorch with spare batteries, and a paper map of the route. GPS trackers are provided and attached to race vests at registration for safety and live progress monitoring. Participants may use a support crew or run unsupported. Solo runners are permitted to use two non-returnable drop bags for personal supplies, which are accessible at the 33-mile and 67-mile marks. A coach service is available to transport runners from the finish in Filey to the start in Hessle for an additional fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
