Event Overview
The Great Ski Race is a Nordic skiing event held at the Tahoe Cross Country Center in Tahoe City, California. The event supports Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue (TNSAR), a non-profit, all-volunteer organization. Race proceeds are used to purchase team equipment and support winter survival and avalanche education programs.
Course Options
Participants can choose between two Nordic ski loops, both starting and finishing at the Tahoe Cross Country Center.
- 26 km course: This route goes around Mt. Watson, offering views of north Lake Tahoe.
- 10 km course: This route stays on the undulating trails of the Nordic center.
A third, non-competitive option called "The Tour Wave" is available for the 26 km course. It is designed for a leisurely pace, is not timed, and has no posted results. Participation is limited to the first 35 registrants.
Registration and Fees
Registration is capped at 800 participants. Fees are the same for the 10 km and 26 km races and increase on scheduled dates leading up to the event. Separate pricing is listed for adults and participants under 18 years old. The event is a fundraiser, and refunds are not possible.
Schedule and Activities
The Tour Wave for the 26 km course has a self-start window. The timed 26 km race begins in waves, and the 10 km race starts later. An awards ceremony is held, recognizing overall winners and age groups. After the races, there is a finish line party with food and live music.
Additional Information
Early bib and t-shirt pickup is available on the days before the event. Race day pickup is also available during a specified morning window. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
