The Drop - Skipton
The Drop is a stripped-back navigation challenge held in Skipton. Participants are transported blindfolded to an undisclosed drop location and must find their own way back to the event centre on foot, without maps, GPS, compasses, or external help. At registration participants hand over electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids and receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried for the duration; breaking the seal results in disqualification.
Distances are stated as the crow flies so actual routes will be longer. Deployment is by bus with blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives; when blindfolds are removed timing begins and every navigation decision is the participant's responsibility. Rules include no GPS unless devices remain sealed inside the emergency bag, no unauthorised maps, and no use of transport or shortcuts. Entries to the shortest option may be restricted to non locals to preserve fairness and organisers may check local status.
Live GPS tracking is available as an optional feature for convenience and safety. Trackers are accurate within about 5 metres but can be affected by buildings and signal black spots; trackers must be returned after the event or a replacement fee of £175 will apply. Parking is available in the town centre and rail and bus links are nearby. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
