The Drop - Nottingham
The Drop is a navigation challenge that removes route information and deliberate certainty. Participants are taken blindfolded to an undisclosed location and must find their own way back to the event centre without markers, maps, GPS, or other navigation aids.
At registration participants hand over electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. Each person receives a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried for the duration of the event. Deployment is by bus while wearing blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives; the blindfolds are removed at the drop point and the clock starts then.
Rules specify no GPS use, no unauthorised maps, travel on foot only, and that breaking the emergency bag seal leads to disqualification. Distances are measured as the crow flies, so actual routes will be significantly longer than the stated distances. The Drop 6 is restricted to non-locals only; entries may be checked and local participants may be moved to other options.
Live GPS tracking is available as an optional, paid feature. Trackers are accurate within about five metres, require good placement for best performance, and must be returned after the event or a replacement fee applies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
