The Drop - Manchester
The Drop is a navigation challenge based at Up & Running, Unit 4, Barton Arcade, Manchester M3 2BH. Participants are transported blindfolded to an undisclosed drop location and must find their own way back to the event centre without route information.
Available distances include:
- 15 miles: dropped 15 miles as the crow flies, no navigation aids
- 10 miles: same rules in a shorter format
- 6 miles: open only to non-locals to avoid local advantage
At registration participants hand over electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. They receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried intact for the duration of the event. Blindfolds are used for deployment and can be replaced with blackout safety goggles if required.
When blindfolds are removed, a participant's time starts. The event forbids use of GPS unless the device is sealed inside the emergency bag. Only maps provided by the organisers may be used if any are supplied. Movement must be on foot and breaking the emergency bag seal leads to disqualification. Distances are measured as the crow flies; actual routes will be significantly longer.
A live GPS tracking system is used for safety. Trackers are typically accurate to within five metres, must be returned after the event, and may incur a replacement fee if lost. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
