The Race

The Devil's Key is a difficult trail running event. It offers three distinct distances, all utilizing sections of the Bruce Trail.

The courses pass through Devil's Glen, run alongside the Mad River, and traverse the Pretty River Valley Provincial Park. A unique feature is the mandatory crawl through the "keyhole" on a side trail. The event is sanctioned by Athletics Ontario.

The Distances

The three distances, with staggered start times, are:

  • The Beast: 66.6 km with close to 6000 feet of cumulative elevation gain. The course reaches the highest point on the entire Bruce Trail. A 12.5-hour cut-off time is enforced.
  • The Half Beast: 33.3 km with around 2500 feet of elevation gain. A 12-hour cut-off time is applied.
  • The Mini Beast: 16.66 km with close to 1200 feet of elevation gain, most of it in the first 5km.

Practical Information

The event takes place on August 22, 2026, at the Devil's Glen Country Club in Duntroon, Ontario. Well-stocked aid stations are provided, less than 10km apart. The event is cup-less, so participants must bring their own collapsible cup or bottle.

Each participant receives a skeleton key that must be carried at all times; losing it ends the race. The race kit includes a bib, sticker, t-shirt, and the key. Finishers receive a medal.

$20 from each registration goes directly to the Blue Mountains Bruce Trail Club. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
