The Bullock Smithy Ultra 56 is a 50th-anniversary ultra-marathon and hike through the Peak District. This unmarked 56-mile route demands strong navigation skills, day and night. Finishers are rewarded with a cooked breakfast and a commemorative item.

Event Overview

The Bullock Smithy Ultra 56 is a 56-mile circular ultra-marathon and hike. It takes place in the Peak District, starting and finishing in Hazel Grove. The event is organized by the 3rd Hazel Grove Scout Group.

Route and Navigation

The course is unmarked and uses a combination of public footpaths, bridleways, and roads. Participants are expected to be proficient in navigation, including during the hours of darkness. The suggested route for 2026 is available online.

Checkpoints along the route include Hazel Grove, Bowstones, Chinley Churn, Edale, Castleton, Peak Forest, Millers Dale, Chelmorton, Earl Sterndale, Brand Top, Wildboarclough, Rainow, and Whiteley Green. Each checkpoint has a specified cut-off time.

Entry Requirements and Kit

Entry includes checkpoint refreshments and a full English breakfast upon finishing. Participants also receive a timed certificate and a 50th-anniversary item. Mandatory equipment includes:

  • Ordnance Survey OL1 and OL24 paper maps (digital alternatives are not a replacement).
  • A compass, whistle, torch with spare batteries, high-visibility jacket, and waterproof coat and trousers.
  • A spare jumper, emergency rations, mug, first aid kit, foil blanket, and a phone with OS Locate or What3Words installed.

The 2026 edition marks the event's 50th anniversary. The entry fee is £50.00. Refunds are only available before the 31st of July, subject to a 10% transaction fee. No deferrals are available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
