The Erie Canal Races
The Erie Canal Races take place in Marcy, New York, offering a selection of distances on a flat and fast course. Participants can choose between several competitive formats that utilize the historic Erie Canal Trail:
- 10 Miles
- 5K (3.1 miles)
- 10-Mile Relay (two-person teams, 5 miles per runner)
The event begins at the Whitesboro High School track, where runners complete a partial lap before heading toward the Canalway Trail via Paul Becker Road. The route includes a crossing over a pedestrian bridge onto the scenic Erie Canal Trail. These races are designed as out-and-back courses. The 10-mile participants turn around near the Harbor Point Lock, while 5K participants have a specific halfway marker to guide them back toward the school. All runners return for a finish on the high school track.
For the relay event, the hand-off between the two team members occurs at the 5-mile mark near the Harbor Point Lock. Registration for all participants includes a T-shirt, a commemorative medal, and access to water stations and on-course support. Post-race snacks are also provided.
The event has specific safety regulations and time limits. All formats are timed, and walkers are not permitted. The 10-mile race has a cut-off time of 2 hours and 30 minutes, while the 5K has a limit of 45 minutes. The use of strollers, pets, bicycles, and skates is prohibited on the course.
