The Big Deal at Great Seal

The Big Deal at Great Seal is a multi-distance trail event held at Great Seal State Park near Chillicothe, OH. The event uses a roughly 20 mile loop as the core course and includes longer distance options that repeat that loop.

Distances

• 100 mile (5 laps of the 20 mile loop)
• 100k (3 laps plus a finishing loop)

Course details note about 3100 to 3200 feet of elevation gain per 20 mile loop. The route is approximately 95% single track and 5% dual track. The first loop includes the Sugarloaf climb; later laps bypass that section. A previously used Shrake Road section has been removed for safety, which increases two-way traffic on about one additional mile across Shawnee Ridge. Several named landmarks appear along the loop, including Ireland Shelter, Sugarloaf, Bald Hill, Sand Hill, Rocky Road, Rock Garden, Annie's Trail, The Cellar, Lick Run, Spandex, Bunker Hill, Shawnee Ridge, and Grouse Rock.

Cutoffs and course controls set a total cutoff of 36 hours for the 100 mile and require starting the final lap within 28 hours. A GPX file is provided for navigation.

Aid and support include five stops per loop at Ireland Shelter (start/finish), Rocky Road, and Lick Run locations. Aid stations will offer water, electrolytes, soda, hot food, and traditional snacks. Crew access is allowed at Ireland Shelter and Lick Run only; crew support at Rocky Road or elsewhere on course is not permitted except in emergencies.

Pacers are allowed for 100k and 100 mile after the first lap, one pacer at a time; pacers must register and wear a pacer bib and access runners only at Ireland Shelter or Lick Run.

Awards include a metal buckle for 100 mile finishers, a wooden 100k belt buckle, woodal finishers items for 20 mile and 5k, podium awards for the top three male and female at each distance, and a Golden Goat recognition for sub 26 hour 100 mile finishes or the top ten percent if no sub 26 hour finishes occur.

Packet pickup is held the evening before the event at 50 West Brewing in Chillicothe; Friday night pickup is mandatory for 100 mile and 100k entries. Mandatory gear for 100 mile and 100k runners includes a GPX file on device, two headlamps or one with spare batteries, a whistle, an emergency foil blanket, minimum 1 L carrying capacity for water, and a collapsible cup. Runners may use up to one 15 L drop bag per aid station and must label bags with name, bib number, and aid station. Parking will be along the campground road per park management and primitive campground options may be limited.
