The Barkley Fall Classic
The Barkley Fall Classic is a 50 kilometer trail race held at Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee on September 19, 2026. The event is organized by Durbin Race Management and follows trails through the Brushy Mountains with numerous climbs, descents, and scenic vistas.
The official course map is not revealed until the night before the race. Course markings exist only at major turns, leaving long sections where runners must confirm they have not missed a turn. GPS devices are prohibited and posting the course or map online can result in disqualification and a ban. Pacers, crew assistance on the course, drop bags, and caching are not allowed. Trekking poles and GU style packets in original packaging are not permitted; GU-like fuel may be carried in a flask.
A decision point separates a shortened marathon finish from the full 50 kilometer route. Runners who choose to continue past that split forfeit the option to record a marathon finish; a working flashlight is required to proceed beyond this point. Runners must report any decision to drop to race staff and to the finish line timing tent. Additional race procedures include wearing a second bib on the back for visibility and reporting to the awards table to have bib punches verified.
Male and female winners receive guaranteed entry to the Big Barkley in spring. The race directs proceeds to Morgan County and Frozen Head State Park; through 2025 contributions exceeded $350,000. Field selections for 2026 were conducted via waitlist drawings. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
