The Barkley Fall Classic - Sep 19, 2026
The Barkley Fall Classic is a 50K trail race held at Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee, organized by Durbin Race Management. The race course and map are not revealed until the night before the event. Registration is handled through UltraSignup and the field has a waitlist; registration closes on Sep 18 at 11:59 PM ET.
The course mixes long runnable sections with steep, repeated climbs and descents and includes scenic vistas. Course markings exist at major turns only, so runners must navigate between those points without GPS. The race is intended to test both physical endurance and mental resilience.
Key race rules include a strict prohibition on GPS devices, no pacers or unofficial participants on course, no drop bags or caching, no trekking poles, and no GU gel packets in their original packets (GU-like fuel may be carried in a flask). Runners must follow the marked course and return to the exact point of reentry if they leave the trail. Aid station crew access is restricted to assigned volunteers. Runners who decide to stop must notify staff and report to the finish timing tent.
There is a decision point where runners who reach it within the time limit may choose a marathon finish or continue to attempt the full 50K; continuing forfeits any marathon credit. Male and female winners receive guaranteed entry to the Big Barkley event. The event directs proceeds to local Morgan County organizations and Frozen Head State Park. An 80% refund is available for withdrawal requests dated before June 1; entrants are asked not to withdraw on UltraSignup and to follow organizer refund procedures.
