Event overview

The Barkley Fall Classic is a trail ultramarathon held at Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee, on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The event distance is 50 km. The course includes large amounts of climb and descent and features sections of runnable trail and steep, strength-sapping hills. The official course map is not revealed until the night before the race.

Course rules and format

GPS devices are prohibited; use may lead to disqualification and a ban. Course markings exist only at major turns, and runners must follow the marked park trails. Pacers, crew running with participants, drop bags, caching, trekking poles, and single-use gel packets in original packaging are not allowed. There is a decision point where runners who choose to continue attempt the full 50 km; those who continue cannot claim a shorter course finish. Runners must report a decision to drop to race staff and to the finish line timing tent. Aid station trash must be placed in provided receptacles or carried.

Logistics and other details

Packet pickup is offered before race day and on race day. An 80% refund is available for cancellations made before June 1; refunds must be requested through the race organizers rather than by withdrawing on the registration website. Race proceeds support Morgan County and Frozen Head State Park; through 2025 the event has contributed over $350,000 to local organizations. Winners receive guaranteed entry to the associated spring event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
