The Barkley Fall Classic at Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee
The Barkley Fall Classic is a 50 kilometer trail race held at Frozen Head State Park. The course is revealed to runners the night before the event and includes long runnable sections, numerous steep climbs and descents, and multiple scenic vistas. Course markings are provided only at major turns, so runners must rely on route-finding on marked park trails.
Race rules restrict equipment and support: GPS devices are not permitted, trekking poles and drop bags are not allowed, and aid station caching is prohibited. Pacers and unregistered participants are not allowed on course. Small nutrition packets like GU are restricted from use unless carried in a compliant container. Runners receive an additional bib at packet pickup that must be worn on the back and remain visible.
A decision point on course separates the marathon option from the 50 km route; those who choose to continue beyond that split cannot later claim the marathon finish. A working flashlight is required to continue past this decision point. If a runner withdraws they must notify staff or a park ranger and report to the finish line timing table.
Logistics note that packet pickup and a pre-race dinner take place the day before the race, and local camping and lodging options are listed for participants.
