The Barkley Fall Classic
The Barkley Fall Classic is a trail event held in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee. It is a 50 kilometer race on a course that includes substantial climb and descent and several scenic vistas. The official course map is not revealed until the night before the event, and markings exist only at major turns.
The event emphasizes navigation and self-reliance. GPS devices are prohibited and use may lead to disqualification. Pacers, unregistered participants, drop bags, caching, trekking poles, and certain gel packet packaging are not allowed. Runners must follow the marked course, carry required items if they opt to continue beyond the decision point, and allow faster runners to pass.
There is a mandatory decision point where runners who arrive within the time limit may choose either to record a marathon finish on a short downhill section or to continue for the full 50 kilometer course; continuing is an all or nothing choice. Runners who withdraw must notify race staff and report to the finish area to avoid unnecessary search and rescue actions.
Registration has a stated closing date of Friday, September 18 at 11:59 PM ET and the race uses a waitlist with drawings to fill the field. A partial refund policy applies for withdrawals before June 1. Proceeds support Morgan County and Frozen Head State Park and local community programs.
