About the race
Terra de Gigantes is an endurance ultramarathon held in Portugal that crosses the country from inland to the Atlantic coast.
The route runs from Torre (Serra da Estrela) to Nazaré and is a linear, GPS-navigated course. Distance is 306.8 km with 8,214 m of positive elevation gain and a 74-hour time limit, in non-stop format and in semi‑self‑sufficiency between support bases. Navigation by GPS is mandatory and the organisation provides the track. The race passes Serra da Estrela, Aldeias do Xisto, Aldeias Históricas, Serra do Açor and Caminhos de Fé. The course uses trails, forest tracks and long paved sections; public roads remain open and traffic rules must be respected.
There are eight mandatory support bases including the finish; athletes must be autonomous between bases. Mandatory equipment includes a GPS with battery/recording capacity, emergency bivy or sleeping bag, thermal blanket, whistle, front and rear lights, phone with emergency numbers and identification. Minimum age is 20 years and organisers recommend prior experience in races of 100 km or more; GPS navigation experience is required. Entry architecture limits places to a base of 100 spots (25 reserved finishers and 75 public) with up to 20 extra places possible. The event provides drop bags at bases, medical support, transfer from Seia to the start and finisher recognition. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
