Tartarus Backyard Ultra
Tartarus Backyard Ultra is a last-person-standing running and rucking event held at Camp 7, Riverside State Park in Spokane, WA. The event runs two separate races: a running race with a loop of 4.1667 miles and a rucking race with a loop of 2.2 miles. Each loop must be completed within one hour, and a new loop begins on the hour. The race continues until only one runner and one rucker remain; the final person must complete one solo loop to be declared the winner. Others are recorded as Did Not Finish.
The format requires participants to be at the start corral when the next loop begins; late starts are not allowed once the bell is rung. Once a loop begins, runners and ruckers must remain on course and may only leave briefly to use portable toilets. Crews and personal aid are permitted before each loop, but runners must provide their own aid during loops. A small area next to the start and finish is available for a chair, cooler, and personal gear, and camping is permitted nearby.
Ruckers must meet core weight requirements: those weighing more than 150 pounds must carry a 30 pound core weight; those under 150 pounds must carry 20 pounds. Core weight excludes water, food, and other consumables. The event offers an event t-shirt and an award for the race winner. A fundraising option can substitute for the registration fee if a minimum amount is raised. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
