Event Overview

Take it to the Lake is a multi-distance running event held at Cave Lake State Park and the Schell Creek Mountain Range. The event features various distances exploring the high-elevation terrain of the Duck Creek Basin and Success Summit.

Distances

  • Half Marathon: A 13.1 mile point-to-point course.
  • 10K: A 6.2 mile downhill course.
  • Kids Fun Run: A 1 mile out-and-back course for children.

The half marathon begins at an elevation of 7,415 feet in Duck Creek Basin. It features a seven-mile climb to Success Summit, reaching a peak of 8,968 feet with a total elevation gain of 1,604 feet. From the summit, the route consists of a downhill descent through aspen and fir trees toward Cave Lake. The course is primarily conducted on gravel roads.

The 10K participants start at the top of Success Summit at 8,968 feet. This route is predominantly downhill on gravel dirt roads, ending at an elevation of 7,292 feet. The final quarter mile of the course features a change in gradient before finishing at Cave Lake State Park.

The Kids Fun Run takes place on a paved road within Cave Lake State Park. This distance is formatted as an out-and-back route.

Logistics and Facilities

Aid stations are positioned approximately every two miles along the courses. The half marathon includes water stations for the first two stops, with water and electrolyte drinks available from Success Summit onward. A clothing drop-off bin is provided at the first aid station for participants to discard layers as temperatures increase.

All races are chip-timed. The event atmosphere includes a post-race BBQ and raffle for participants at the finish line area. Awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in the half marathon and 10K. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
