Sydney's Backyard Ultra
Sydney's Backyard Ultra is an open-ended backyard ultra held at St Ives Showground, Australia on 17 April 2027. Runners complete repeated measured loops of 6.71 km each hour; the event continues until only one runner completes a loop that no one else can match. Distance is therefore unlimited and recorded in the number of yards completed.
Each loop must be completed within the hour to count. The format forbids pacers, non-competitors on course during an active yard, personal aid while a runner is on a yard, and artificial aids such as trekking poles. The official course is marked in advance and has 34 metres of elevation gain per yard.
Mandatory gear includes an allocated race number, a head torch with spare batteries, a charged mobile phone, and a reusable cup or flask because the event is cupless. Recommended items for comfort between yards include shelter and a chair (max gazebo size 3 m by 3 m), warm clothing, spare shoes, lighting for personal areas, recovery tools, and a personal first-aid kit.
