Trail Running on the North Shore
The Superior Fall Trail Race takes place along the North Shore of Minnesota. The event features a point-to-point course primarily on the Superior Hiking Trail, a path that parallels Lake Superior. The race is organized by Rocksteady Running and is designed by ultrarunners for the trail running community.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 100 miles
- 50 miles
- 26.2 miles (Moose Mountain Marathon)
The terrain includes technical sections with rocks and roots, as well as multiple river crossings, such as the Temperance, Onion, and Baptism Rivers. Significant landmarks along the route include Mt Trudee, Sawmill Dome, Oberg Mountain, and Bean and Bear Lakes. The course offers views of Lake Superior from various points along the trail.
Support for the event includes aid stations staffed by volunteers, such as those at Tettegouche, Beaver Bay, and County Road 6. Logistics include bus transportation for specific race starts. For the longer distances, crews and pacers are permitted according to specific event guidelines. The event utilizes HAM radio operators for communication and tracking across the remote sections of the trail.
