St Peters Way Ultra
The St Peters Way Ultra is a trail running event covering approximately 42 miles (67.5 km) across the historic Essex countryside. The course follows an ancient pilgrimage route dating back to the 7th century, starting at Chipping Ongar and heading in an easterly direction toward the coast. The journey concludes at the 1,400-year-old chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall at Bradwell on Sea.
The route consists of a variety of terrains, including footpaths, bridleways, fields, rural tracks, and road sections through local villages. The final miles take place on a raised sea wall. Underfoot conditions are often undulating and range from short grass to thick mud. Participants must be prepared for exposed sections and potential weather changes.
There are four outdoor checkpoints located along the course at approximately:
- 7.9 miles
- 15.8 miles
- 25.4 miles
- 34 miles
These stations provide water, soft drinks, and a variety of sweet and savory snacks. While the route features way markers, runners are required to use basic navigation skills with the provided GPX files or printed maps. A mandatory kit list is in place for safety, including a headtorch, waterproof clothing, and the ability to carry one liter of fluid. All participants are fitted with a tracker for live monitoring.
The event provides a bag transfer service from the start to the finish. Due to the remote nature of the finish line, a pre-booked minibus service is available to transport runners back to the start location for a fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
