Sri Chinmoy Tan Team Relays
The event is a combined team relay and individual race held at the Pillars of Wisdom on the Tan Track around Melbourne Botanic Gardens. The team relay covers 11 laps of the Tan, a distance chosen to approximate a marathon. Timing is by a chip attached to the team baton, which must be carried and exchanged in the transition zone at the Pillars of Wisdom each lap. Each team has four members; members may form all-male, all-female, or mixed teams, with mixed teams requiring at least one male and one female. Each runner must complete a minimum of two laps. Teams are split into Open and Over 50 categories (all members over 50 on race day).
Individual race options include a solo marathon (11 laps plus an extra 100 metres at the start), a 3-lap race and a 1-lap race. Drink stations are placed every 2 km and provide electrolyte and water. Net mat time is used to determine placings.
Awards are given to top teams in male, female and mixed Open and Over 50 categories. Solo marathon finishers receive a finisher's medal and podium medals are awarded for top male and female finishers. The 1-lap and 3-lap events present medals to the first three males and females in several age categories, including U18 and decade bands from 18-39 to 80+.
