Squatchy Leftovers : South Mountain Reservation, West Orange NJ

Squatchy Leftovers is a trail party held at the Turtleback Rock Picnic Area in South Mountain Reservation, West Orange, NJ. The event uses a 5K loop course repeated for longer distances and offers multiple distance options.

Distances:

  • 5K
  • 10K
  • 25K
  • 50K
  • Kids 1M

The course mixes hard packed carriage roads and technical singletrack with rocks and roots. Notable features include a very rocky 200+ ft descent early in the loop, a 100 ft climb near mile 2.5, and a final mile of singletrack. Elevation gain by distance is approximately: 50K ~ 2,890 ft; 25K ~ 1,445 ft; 10K ~ 578 ft; 5K ~ 289 ft. The loop is the same 5K used for the Frosty Fat Sass Trail Party.

Cutoffs and logistics: the 50K and 25K have an 8 hour 30 minute cutoff (about 16:27 and 32:55 per mile paces respectively); the 10K and 5K use the same overall cutoff. The main trailhead lot fits about 110 cars with overflow directed to nearby side streets. Public transit options include NJ Transit Bus Route 73 and a train to Mountain Station with short walks to the trailhead.

Aid station and services: the start/finish aid station provides hot food, snacks, water, Skratch Hydration, and gluten free and vegan options. A first aid kit and AED are kept at Squatch HQ; private changing tents and a quiet Jackalope Tent are available. The course is marked with neon pink reflective ribbon and large red directional arrows. Charity bibs are available and require raising or donating $350 to the event charity partner Bigger Than The Trail by the stated deadline.

Additional community features include a ReTrail gear bin program, a food drive partnership collecting specific pantry items, and pacer and crew policies that allow guides for athletes over 60 and athletes with disabilities and limit crew aid to the start/finish area.
