Squatchy Leftovers : South Mountain Reservation, West Orange, NJ
Squatchy Leftovers is a trail running event held at Turtleback Rock Picnic Area in the South Mountain Reservation. The event uses a 5K loop course and offers multiple distance options:
- 50K - ten 5K loops, ~2,890 ft gain
- 25K - five 5K loops, ~1,445 ft gain
- 10K - two 5K loops, ~578 ft gain
- 5K - one 5K loop, ~289 ft gain
- Kids 1 mile run
The single loop combines hard packed carriage roads and technical singletrack with rocks and roots. Notable course features include a rocky 200+ ft descent around mile one, a 100 ft climb near mile 2.5, and a final mile of singletrack. The loop is the same 5K used for the Frosty Fat Sass Trail Party and includes portajohns at the start and finish area.
Aid is located at the start/finish so participants pass it every 3.1 miles. The aid station provides hot food, snacks, Skratch Hydration, and a selection of gluten free and vegan items. First aid supplies and an AED are available at Squatch HQ. Volunteers staff the course and a quiet Jackalope Tent is provided as a low sensory and breastfeeding space.
The event supports the nonprofit Bigger Than The Trail. Capacity is capped at 400 participants and the race typically sells out by early November. No dogs are permitted.
