South Island Ultra Marathon

The South Island Ultra Marathon takes place on 8 May 2027 on the West Coast Wilderness Trail, finishing on the beachfront at Hokitika. Entry is limited to 400 participants.

There are four events:

  • 100 km Greymouth to Hokitika, solo or team of 2, team change Old Chch Road
  • 54 km Old Christchurch Road to Hokitika, solo or team of 2, team change Sunny Bight
  • 24 km Lake Kaniere to Hokitika, solo
  • 6 km Kaniere township run or walk, solo

The trail route passes lakes, reservoirs, rivers, streams, water races, swing bridges, bridges from historic tram lines, a western town area, forestry, wetlands, boardwalks, mountains and the sea. The 100 km course has approximately 720 m total elevation and the 54 km course about 500 m, figures based on competitor records from 2021.

Both the 100 km and 54 km distances may be run as teams of two with designated change locations. All four events finish on the beachfront at Hokitika. Fundraising associated with the event lists three beneficiary organizations and shows NZ$106 raised toward a NZ$1,500 goal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
