Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon
The Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon is a sprint-distance triathlon staged at Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston, Virginia each May. The event uses the park beach and surrounding roads and combines open-water swimming with road cycling and a paved run course.
Distances:
- 750 meter swim from a sandy beach in Smith Mountain Lake.
- 20 kilometer bike on a rolling 12 mile course with the first 5 miles inside the state park.
- 5 kilometer run on a paved out and back course with lake views.
The swim is a time trial start with athletes entering one at a time onto a rectangular course that includes two right turns and sighting buoys every 50 to 75 meters. Water temperatures at this time of year have ranged from 59 to 71 F, with typical readings in the low to mid 60s. The bike route is described as well paved and rolling, featuring faster sections outside the park and a return into the park toward transition. The run follows the park road, passes spectators, and provides lake views on both sides.
The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned; athletes must hold a USAT membership or purchase a 1-day license (sprint 1-day license listed as $14). Packet pickup is offered on the Friday evening before and on race morning at the Swim Area Pavilion; photo ID is required. Race entries include a race shirt, socks, finisher medal, and post-race food and drink. The park enforces a 25 mph speed limit on park roads.
