Slickville 5K Coal Mine Climb and 2 Mile Fun Walk
The event on August 8, 2026 takes place in Slickville, Pennsylvania at the intersection of Rte 819 and Main Street, with both courses starting and finishing at the Harold Shawley Centennial Amphitheater.
Distances:
- 5K run
- 2 Mile fun walk with easier and more challenging route options
The 5K follows a revised course that uses much of the former route in the opposite direction. Runners leave the fireman's grounds onto the Westmoreland Heritage Trail (WHT), run south on PA 819, then climb Sportsman Road to a peak overlooking the Slickville Sportsman's Grounds. After a long downhill back road and an aid station at the WHT, the course climbs Jamison Street, loops past Elrico Park, and returns via the WHT with a steady ascent to the amphitheater. An aid station is located near the base of the main hill.
The 2 Mile fun walk also departs from the amphitheater along the WHT and offers two choices. The easier route makes a U turn and returns along the WHT with an aid station at Sportsman Road. The more rigorous option follows PA 819 and Sportsman Road over the hill, descends to the same aid station, then returns on the WHT. Walkers are asked to keep right on the trail to allow runners to pass on the left.
After the run and walk, participants receive a complimentary pancake breakfast featuring locally sourced maple syrup. The day also includes an awards ceremony and community activities such as a car show, craft and food booths, children's activities, cow patty bingo, musical entertainment, and a fireworks display.
