Sleeping Beauty Hike
The Sleeping Beauty Hike is a mountain trail in Riversdale, Western Cape, that follows a route from the Old Toll House to the crest of Sleeping Beauty and back. The route covers approximately 14 km and gains about 810 m in elevation, with several streams to be crossed and varied Fynbos vegetation along the way.
The trail passes through a Yellowwood forest where water bottles are re-filled, then winds toward the summit behind the Sleeping Beauty peak. The final approach includes a steep 1.5 km climb to the crest, which offers panoramic views of the Langeberg Mountain Range. The route duration is listed as about six hours and the hike is rated 7 out of 10.
Notable plant life along the route includes protea species such as speciosa, grandiceps and coronata, and a wide variety of Erica species. Rare local heaths named in the route description include Erica blennagrandiflora, Erica inclas and Erica papyraracea.
The organiser lists compulsory kit items including a suitable lightweight hydration pack, sunscreen, hat, comfortable shoes, food and enough water, and appropriate warm and waterproof layers depending on conditions.
