Race formats and rules

The 8 mile event consists of two laps, with lap direction alternating by year (even years clockwise, odd years counterclockwise). Trekking poles are allowed for the 8 mile. All 8 mile finishers receive awards; age group awards go to the top three male and female finishers in 39 & Under and 40 & Up. Food and beverages are provided after the race.

The Backyard Ultra uses a single lap of roughly 4.17 miles. Each lap begins on the hour; a coin toss determines lap direction. Participants must be in the start corral and begin with the bell; late starts are not allowed. Trekking poles and non-participant pacers are not allowed for the Backyard Ultra. Each lap must be completed within the hour to count; the last runner to complete a lap is the winner. Crewing areas are recommended near the start/finish. No personal aid is allowed outside the start/finish aid station area for either event.

Course

The loop measures about 4.15-4.20 miles with roughly 450 feet of gain per lap. Trails are forested cross-country ski and single-track within the Natrona County Parks Multi-Use Trail System. Course elevations range from about 7,800 to 8,100 feet. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
