Sgt Chris Hampton Memorial 5k
The Sgt Chris Hampton Memorial 5k is an annual memorial run established in 2021 by the Dearborn Police Officer's Charity after the passing of a Dearborn police sergeant in 2020. The event was created to raise awareness of anxiety, depressive and other mental health issues, particularly among first responders who may remain silent about these struggles.
Organizers partner with the City of Dearborn and Trivium Racing. The event is presented with a rotating theme inspired by 1980s and 1990s movies; past themes included RoboCop, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters and Rocky. The 2026 edition is the sixth annual event and uses The Big Lebowski as its theme. The chosen date coincides with the end of National Police Week, a period when officers who lost their lives in the line of duty are recognized.
This year’s charity beneficiary is First H.E.L.P. The event continues to support service organizations such as Call for Backup, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Michigan Concerns of Police Survivors, and The Barb Smith Suicide Resource & Response Network. Stated goals include reaching more people, adding new participants, increasing awareness and connection for those affected by suicide or depressive illnesses, and raising funds for relevant service organizations.
