Event overview

The Medicine Hat Massacre (SEASAR MHM) is an adventure race held in the Cypress Hills area near Elkwater, Cypress County, Alberta. The full event is a 9-hour team race in which pairs navigate to checkpoints across park terrain using a map and compass. Teams travel by mountain bike, on foot, and by paddle, and some sections involve bushwhacking. Checkpoints are scored by visiting markers placed throughout the park.

Race formats and rules

There are two formats: the full race and a shorter Lite race of 4.5 hours. The full race has a dark start; the Lite race begins in daylight and allows use of GPS in addition to map and compass. Teams consist of two members who must follow the mandatory equipment requirements listed by the organizers. The Lite course follows portions of the larger course.

Organization and purpose

The event is organized by the South Eastern Alberta Search & Rescue Association (SEASAR) and operates as a non-profit. Race proceeds support search and rescue activities in southern Alberta. Teams may also earn race points by carrying donated food to a designated checkpoint for Medicine Hat’s foodbank, the Root Cellar.

Context and history

The race name references the 1873 Cypress Hills Massacre. Organizers state the event acknowledges that history while using the park’s landscapes for orienteering, biking, hiking, and paddling. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
