Sawmill Trail Runs

The Sawmill Trail Runs is an annual trail running event held at Staunton State Park in Pine, Colorado. Originally established as a "Fat Ass" event in 2013, it became an official race in 2017 and moved to its current location in 2021. The park features a varied landscape ranging from high grassy meadows at 8,100 feet to granite cliffs exceeding 10,000 feet.

The event offers three distinct distance options on a scenic and technical course:

  • 50 km (12-hour time limit)
  • 16 Mile (11-hour time limit)
  • 8 Mile (11-hour time limit)

The event has a total capacity of 250 runners across all distances. Registration typically opens in early October, and the event frequently reaches its capacity before the race date. All participants are responsible for obtaining their own State Park Pass for entry.

The race starts and finishes at the Ranch Hand Group Picnic Area. Due to permit regulations and limited space within the park, most participants are required to park off-site at a designated park-and-ride approximately 10 minutes away and use a provided shuttle service. Indoor lodging and camping are not provided on-site, but several nearby towns such as Conifer, Morrison, and Golden offer accommodations.

The course features well-stocked aid stations. Because the event takes place in December at high altitudes, conditions can vary significantly, including snow, ice, or frigid temperatures. Participants are permitted to use traction devices or snowshoes if conditions require them. All finishers receive a medal and a race shirt, provided they register before the guarantee deadline.
