Frozen Devil's Head

Frozen Devil's Head is a winter trail race in Sedalia, CO, covering 21.6 miles out and back from the gate at Highway 67 to Devil's Head and back. The route climbs 2,627 feet overall, beginning near 7,640 feet and reaching about 9,662 feet at the turnaround just below the lookout. All climbing occurs on the outbound leg.

The course uses Rampart Range Road while the road is closed to vehicles from December 1 through spring. Surface conditions vary by week and can include packed snow, shaded ice, refrozen ruts, dry dirt, or a combination of these. Weather and Forest Service decisions can shorten, delay, or cancel the race.

Aid is provided at the start and finish, at mile 5.4, at the turnaround at mile 10.8, and again around mile 16.2 on the return. Hot fluids and shelter are available at the start, the turnaround, and the finish. Aid on course may be delivered by snowmobile or ATV.

There is a mandatory gear list that can be checked at packet pickup, at the start, and at the turnaround. Traction requirements are decided the week of the event and announced by email at least 48 hours in advance. The event is cupless, so participants must bring their own bottle or flask. No crew or spectators are allowed past the gate.

Parking is in the public lot on the south side of Highway 67 at Rampart Range Road, 1141 Rampart Range Rd, Sedalia. The field is limited to 200 runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
