Saturnalia - Squaxin Park, Olympia, WA
Saturnalia is a trail race held at Squaxin Park in Olympia. The event is billed as a season finale and is a roughly 10K trail run that starts and finishes at the gym and track of Reeves Middle School in the Eastside neighborhood.
The route runs through school grounds, down to Eastbay Drive and into Squaxin Park. The course uses most of the park's upper and lower loop, including the Ellis Cove trail, and offers views of Puget Sound and the Capitol above downtown Olympia. The race organizer tracks finish times but does not use podiums; all finishers receive an award or medal.
Aid and event services are provided on site. A holiday themed aid station at the finish offers water, Tailwind, soda, fruit, chips, pickles, hot beverages, cookies and other treats. Basic first aid and safety support are available. The event is cupless to reduce waste; participants are asked to bring a collapsible cup and cups are available for purchase at packet pickup. Race packets can be picked up on race day at Reeves Middle School.
The event plants a tree for each finisher through One Tree Planted and provides a hand crafted finisher keepsake from a local artist, a limited edition race sticker and other finisher items. Trails remain open to other users during the race and parking is available at Reeves Middle School. The event does not enforce a course cutoff and walking the course is permitted.
